Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s tallest mountain, is one of the world’s highest free-standing massifs. Despite its height, no technical climbing skills are required. Trekking routes pass through five unique vegetation zones: grassland, rainforest, heathland, moorland, alpine desert, and the arctic summit zone.

Mount Kilimanjaro Trekking Routes
There are a number of routes to choose from and all are challenging due to the altitude. Your chances of reaching the summit are vastly improved with good preparation and acclimatization. Longer treks can also increase your chances of reaching the summit.
All of our treks are accompanied by qualified mountain guides, and porters carry all equipment. You will only need to carry a day pack. Our trekking operator is a member of the Kilimanjaro Association of Tour Operators (KIATO) which adheres to a range of guidelines for the fair treatment of porters and other crew in Mount Kilimanjaro.
Trekking Routes
Mount Kilimanjaro trekking routes include Machame, Marangu, Lemosho, Rongai, and Umbwe—each offering unique scenery, challenges, and unforgettable summit experiences.
Marangu Route.
Also known as the “Coca-Cola” Route.
is favored by beginners who prefer hut accommodations over tents. While it seems easier, its shorter duration offers limited time for acclimatization, leading to a lower summit success rate. Proper preparation is crucial for a successful climb.
Lemosho Route
is renowned for its stunning scenery and longer duration, making it the most expensive Kilimanjaro route. Starting west of the mountain, it runs parallel to the Shira Route, crossing the Shira Plateau and climbing the Barranco Wall. The final ascent to Uhuru Peak is challenging, with descent via the Mweka Route.
Machame Route.
The Machame Route is ideal for budget-conscious trekkers, offering a more affordable Kilimanjaro experience with fewer camp amenities and lower luggage weight limits. Despite this, you’ll enjoy the reassurance of choosing Green Planet Safaris for a safe and memorable journey.
Shira Route
Trekking Mount Kilimanjaro via the Shira Route offers a challenging ascent, starting directly at 3,500m to bypass rainforest days. Climbers traverse the scenic Shira Plateau before connecting with the Lemosho Route. Due to limited acclimatization, the trek demands strong physical readiness and confidence in handling altitude, resulting in a more demanding climb
Rongai Route
The Rongai Route, starting from Kilimanjaro’s drier northern side, is ideal during the Wet Season. Though less scenic, its gradual gradient and well-spaced camps allow for proper acclimatization. With fewer trekkers, it feels wilder, offering possible wildlife sightings. The descent follows the Marangu Route to the southeast
Umbwe Route
The Umbwe Route is a steep, exposed trail with a rapid two-day ascent to Barranco Camp, allowing little time for acclimatization. It joins the Machame Route to the summit and is only suitable for highly experienced trekkers, ideally over a full seven-day itinerary
