Nyerere National Park
Nyerere National Park, established in 2019, is the largest national park in Africa, covering over 30,000 square kilometers. Formerly part of the Selous Game Reserve, the park was named in honor of Tanzania’s founding leader, Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere. This vast wilderness remains ecologically and biologically intact, supporting a diverse range of wildlife with strong predator-prey dynamics.
It is home to large populations of elephants, buffalo, and lions, as well as one of Africa’s last strongholds for wild dogs. The mighty Rufiji River, renowned for its hippos and crocodiles, flows through the park into the Indian Ocean. Designated as a photographic zone, it is a major attraction for visitors.
Climate
Nyerere National Park has a dry season from July to October, with no rain, clear skies, and low humidity. Wildlife is easier to spot due to thin vegetation and reliance on water sources. The wet season runs from November to May, featuring afternoon storms, high humidity, and lush landscapes that attract migratory birds.
